MIGRA/PS-Export for the Domino Migration Engine
Reference Customers
Here are some TBS Software customers who are using MIGRA to migrate their users from OfficeVision/MVS to Lotus Notes/Domino:
Caterpillar
Caterpillar Inc., headquartered in Peoria, Illinois is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines, and a leading global supplier of diesel engines.
Since 1986, Caterpillar has made a major investment in IBM OfficeVision/MVS and related products. The e-mail user base is now over 26,000 users, comprised of Caterpillar employees, dealers and suppliers,
With the advent of affordable client-server messaging, Caterpillar plans to transition these users to Lotus Notes/Domino, with migrations phased over the next several years. Because of their heavy dependence on e-mail, it was important for the users to maintain their work-in-progress as they moved from the host environment. Caterpillar chose MIGRA/PS-Export for the Domino Migration Engine to migrate users, their mail, address books and calendar information to Notes.
"MIGRA allows us to migrate our users and their documents quickly and efficiently" says Dave Marshall, Project Manager at Caterpillar. "The speed of migration has immediate benefits in reducing the mainframe utilization and related costs".
Caterpillar also uses CLASY for long-term archival of e-mail from OfficeVision/MVS. Even after they have moved to Notes, CLASY lets users look up and retrieve these items directly to their Notes Inbox.
AmSouth Bank
AmSouth Bank Corporation, headquartered in Birmingham Alabama, is one of the Southeast's premier banks. AmSouth's oldest predecessor bank, First National Bank of Birmingham, opened for business in 1873. Today, AmSouth operates over 270 banking offices in four states and has asset exceeding $18 billion.
Traditionally, bank computing was centralized around mainframe processors. However, as personal computers evolved, the implementation of workstation and client server based systems have increased significantly. At AmSouth, many users indicated their desire to move from IBM's OfficeVision/MVS to Lotus Notes.
Two issues arose in achieving this goal: migration and co-existence. AmSouth wanted the ability to easily migrate users and their current e-mail messages to Lotus Notes. It was important to make the transition as seamless as possible as well as to allow users who had migrated to be able to continue electronic communication with departments remaining on OfficeVision/MVS.
To address these issues, AmSouth chose two TBS/Icom products:
- OfficePath/SNADS, along with Lotus SoftSwitch Central, allows users to exchange e-mail between the two environments.
- MIGRA gives AmSouth the ability to coordinate migration of users in conjunction with their roll-out of the Notes infrastructure and training.
Michael O'Brien, Vice President and Senior Project Manager in Technology Planning commented "MIGRA and OfficePath greatly simplified the process of moving existing e-mail users to the Lotus Notes environment. MIGRA was a much better alternative than asking users or administrators to do it manually."
Regarding software implementation, O'Brien adds "an e-mail gateway has more components than you would expect at first. We were pleased that MIGRA and OfficePath installed without a hitch".
Northeast Utilities
The Northeast Utilities (NU) system is New England's largest electricity provider, serving 1.7 million customers through its operating subsidiaries, The Connecticut Light and Power Company (CL&P), Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECO), and Public Service Company of New Hampshire (PSNH).
PSNH has been a user of IBM's OfficeVision/MVS for over 10 years with about 1,000 users on 3270-type terminals. As part of a project to standardize all parts of the organization on Lotus Notes, it was critical to be able to quickly and efficiently move this user group to the new environment. NU implemented MIGRA to help them make the move from OV/MVS to Lotus Notes.
"Our goal was to migrate our users and all their relevant documents from a 3270 environment to a PC environment with as little disruption as possible", says Paul Findley, NU's Systems Programmer responsible for the project. "This project represents a major cultural change from mainframe to PC e-mail for our users. We chose MIGRA as the means of helping reduce the amount of things the users had to absorb to achieve our goals in a reasonable timeframe".
Findley adds, "Key to the success was the ease to install the MIGRA product. We were able to get a demo system up and running within a week to ensure management acceptance".
